DHEA Test (Dehydroepiandrosterone)
Specimens: Two saliva samples collected at specified times on
the same day.
Target Population This test can be done in menstruating women from day
2 up to day 8 of the cycle and in MALES & non-menstruating females any
day.
Hormone(s) Tested The free (bioactive) fractions of both DHEA and DHEA-S
are quantified. Their effects are nearly equal based on physiological
and clinical criteria.
Clinical Use
1. This test is intended for individuals who are suspected of having a
low DHEA level and would like to augment their depressed levels with exogenous
DHEA.
2. This test can be used for therapeutic monitoring of hormones. This
facilitates the adjustment of dosages to maintain acceptable physiological
levels thereby avoiding under/over dosing.Note: It is rather easy to overdose
on DHEA using over-the-counter preparations without an objective basis
for supplementation and monitoring.
