DHEA Challenge Test - DCT
Specimens:
Four saliva specimens are collected. The first sample is a random baseline
measurement of DHEA, Testosterone and Estradiol. It is then followed by
a 5-6 day challenge with DHEA. The second sample is collected on the last
day of the challenge.
(Refer to Technical Bulletin 5 for instructions)
Target Population
The DCT is used in women and men who suffer from Estrogen and/or Testosterone
dependent/associated pathologies, as shown in the table below

Hormones Tested
DHEA, Testosterone, and Estradiol are measured in both samples. The post
challenge
(2nd Sample) collection is used to determine DHEA levels and its conversion
efficiency to downstream hormones (ex. Testosterone and Estradiol).
Clinical Use
Description: This test is intended for individuals who have low DHEA levels
and would like to supplement with exogenous DHEA. However, there is a
concern that DHEA may be excessively converted to Testosterone or Estradiol.
Conversion efficiencies are a phenotypic expression and can vary from
person to person.
Examples: Women with uterine fibroids can be tested to determine
if supplemental DHEA is
converting to estrogens, which promote fibroid growth.
