~ Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month ~
Happy Mother’s Day to you and all the wonderful mothers you know!
Fact ~ a 50-year-old woman has a 2.8% mortality risk related to hip fracture during her remaining lifetime, which is equivalent to her risk from breast cancer.
We screen for breast cancer annually; what are we doing to help our moms and patients maintain their bone strength year after year?
In honor of Mother’s Day and Osteoporosis Awareness & Prevention Month, this newsletter will explore options to improve bone and joint health. Please scroll down to learn more about the toxic effects of lead on bone, the benefits of magnesium for osteoarthritis-induced joint pain, and our functional Bone Health Panel that assesses current, active bone loss.
~ May News Articles ~
Did you know bone is the most common location of lead storage in the body, and approximately 90% of the total body burden of lead is stored in bone tissue?
Lead is an element that does not play any physiological or beneficial role in the human body. Research shows it is highly toxic to bone cells, including osteoclasts and osteoblasts, and reduces the activity of enzymes and the function of structural proteins. Lead exposure has also been recognized as a risk factor that contributes to the development of osteoporosis, especially in perimenopausal women.

The Toxic Effects of Lead Exposure on Bone Health
Stress increases magnesium loss, and sub-optimal magnesium status can contribute to osteoarthritis (OA). Evidence also suggests magnesium supplementation may help prevent OA and treat acute OA-induced joint pain.
Research shows magnesium supports healthy bones and joints by:
- Extending the lifespan of the cells that produce new, healthy cartilage
- Strengthening bones
- Inhibiting the destruction of cartilage
- Supporting healthy cellular function and energy production
- Slowing down cellular aging
- Reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines
- And more!

Treat the cause with the Bone Health Panel from DiagnosTechs!
The DiagnosTechs Bone Health Panel is a convenient, non-invasive test panel that provides valuable and actionable clinical information.
By assessing the levels of six key hormones ~ Estradiol, Progesterone, DHEA, Testosterone, Cortisol x 2, and FSH ~ in saliva, as well as the bone metabolism marker deoxypyridinoline (Pyrilinks-D) in urine, the Bone Health Panel helps evaluate and monitor patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis and those who are at risk of developing osteopenia or osteoporosis.
As a truly functional laboratory test, you can order the Bone Health Panel to confirm the effectiveness of a bone-supportive treatment protocol to reduce bone loss.
Why is it important to maintain bone density and prevent bone loss?
- Worldwide, one in three women and one in five men over 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture.
- Individuals who suffer from a hip fracture have an overall 20% greater risk of dying the following year, and men have a higher mortality risk than women.
- One in three adults who lived independently before a hip fracture remained in a nursing home for at least a year after the injury.
- Osteoporosis accounts for more hospital days than several other diseases, including myocardial infarction, diabetes, and breast cancer, in women over 45 years of age.
- A 50-year-old woman has a 2.8% risk of death related to hip fracture during her remaining lifetime, which is equivalent to her risk of death from breast cancer.
- In men, estimates suggest that the lifetime risk of an osteoporotic fracture is greater than that of prostate cancer.
A survey by the International Osteoporosis Foundation determined that postmenopausal women deny personal risk, lack dialogue about osteoporosis with their healthcare providers, and have restricted access to diagnosis and treatment before the first fracture, resulting in an under-diagnosis and undertreatment of osteoporosis. Research shows patients can significantly reduce bone loss with an integrative, naturopathic treatment protocol when they know they need to protect their bone health.
